How to choose right colour

The kitchen takes up approximately 40% of the visual space in your home and typically consumes half your budget. This is a reason that colour scheme for the kitchen should be your first consideration. We know how difficult to pick one or two in plenty of shades, tones, and hues. At Zen Living, we have more than 600 colour options and make sure to offer the best conditions that you can find the perfect choice, including a list of four tips on how to choose the right colour for your kitchen!

How to choose right colour

1. Start with the conditions of space

What will your kitchen space look like? Is it big or small? Dark or light? When you start to think about color, start with which hues will best highlight your dream kitchen — but also be sure to keep in mind the specific circumstances of the space:

A small or low-ceilinged kitchen will feel more spacious when painted in light or natural tones, dark colours will make the space feel oppressive and unwelcoming. Otherwise, large kitchens can experiment with darker shades, as the amount of light and space the kitchen has will ensure the room still feels airy.

2. Set the design style

Have you defined your kitchen style yet? Different styles will fit well with different colors. Traditional kitchens with shaker doors work particularly well with natural or white shades; Modern kitchens work well with warmer tones whereas monochrome design is ideal for minimalist style.

3. Think about harmony

Now you should start defining whether you want a specific color or at least a light, dark, or neutral tone. If still hesitate, let's think about harmony to help rule out certain designs!

When choosing colour for your kitchen, you need to keep everything around such as walls, floor, ceiling,... in mind that can complement or break the cohesion in your space. If your living room is painted in cool grey, for instance, you may consider variants of gray or at least stick to the same cool shade. A kitchen usually looks best if all the colors and tones are kept together in chromatic harmony.

Once you’ve taken these aspects into consideration, you can now remove all the colors that don’t pair well with the rest of your home.

4. Look for inspiration

Keep it at the final step to avoid being overwhelmed by the huge of inspirational images. Great places to find inspiration are Pinterest, Instagram, and various interior design magazines. Zen Living has plenty of kitchen design, colour library, and completed works on our Pinterest page that you can look through as a solid starting point!
